Yoga Changed My Life: The Practice I Almost Never Tried

There was a time when I believed yoga simply wasn’t for me.

I thought you had to be flexible before you could even step into a yoga class. I remember walking by a yoga studio and peeking through the window, wondering how anyone could possibly do those poses.

It looked impossible.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Taking that first class was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Today, yoga is one of the most important parts of my healthy lifestyle—not because it made me flexible, but because it changed me from the inside out.

Yoga Taught Me How to Breathe

When most people think about yoga, they think about stretching.

What surprised me most was learning how to breathe.

Over the years, I’ve discovered that my breath is one of the most powerful tools I have to calm my nervous system when life feels stressful or overwhelming. Instead of reacting to every challenge,

yoga has taught me to pause, take a deep breath, and respond with a little more peace.

That lesson has helped me just as much off the mat as it has on it.

The Benefits Go Far Beyond Flexibility

Yes, yoga has made me more flexible, but that’s only a small part of the story.

Regular yoga practice has also helped me:

  • Improve my balance
  • Build strength without punishing my joints
  • Improve my posture
  • Increase my flexibility
  • Reduce stress and muscle tension
  • Improve body awareness
  • Feel calmer and more present

One of the things I love most about yoga is that it’s gentle, yet incredibly effective. It meets you where you are, whether you’re 25 or 75.

My Favorite Pose Is the Simplest One

My favorite part of every yoga practice isn’t a challenging pose.

It’s Savasana, also known as Corpse Pose.

For a few quiet minutes, you simply lie still.

No striving.
No accomplishing.
No checking your phone.
No rushing to the next thing.

Just breathing.

Those few minutes have taught me to slow down, quiet my mind, and simply be present. Sometimes that’s exactly what my mind and body need the most.

One of My Greatest Joys

One of the unexpected blessings of yoga has been sharing it with my daughter.

Whether we’re practicing at home or in beautiful places around the world, those moments have become some of my favorite memories.

Health isn’t only about preventing disease or losing weight.

It’s about creating a life that allows you to enjoy meaningful experiences with the people you love.

“I’m Not Flexible Enough.”

If you’ve ever said those words…

You’re exactly where I was.

The truth is, you don’t become flexible before yoga—you become more flexible because of yoga.

Every pose can be modified.

Every body is different.

There is no perfect way to practice yoga.

There is only your practice.

How to Start a Yoga Practice

If you’re thinking about trying yoga, don’t overcomplicate it.

Here are a few simple tips:

  • Start with a beginner or gentle yoga class.
  • Practice for just 10–20 minutes a few days each week.
  • Focus on your breathing more than perfecting each pose.
  • Listen to your body and never force a movement that causes pain.
  • Progress at your own pace and celebrate small improvements.

If attending a class feels intimidating, start at home.

There are many wonderful beginner yoga videos online that guide you through each movement step by step. Look for instructors who offer Beginner Yoga, Gentle Yoga, or Chair Yoga if you’re new to the practice or have limited mobility. The goal isn’t to keep up with someone else—it’s simply to begin.

It’s Never Too Late

For me, yoga isn’t about mastering difficult poses.

It’s about creating a stronger body, a calmer nervous system, and a more peaceful mind.

Health isn’t just about the food on your plate.

It’s also about how you move, how you breathe, and how you care for your mind.

If you’ve been waiting until you’re more flexible…

Don’t wait.

I understand because I once stood outside that yoga studio wondering if I belonged.

Now I know the answer.

You don’t have to be flexible to begin. You simply have to begin. 💚
